More trouble for Johnson Sakaja as UoN confirms he is still a student and hasn’t completed his Actuarial Science degree course

The Commission for University Education (CUE) told Sunday Nation that the senator presented a degree from a Ugandan university for regularisation, which he intended to use for clearance for the race after several documents were leaked.

The University of Nairobi (UoN), where the senator has often claimed he graduated with a degree in actuarial science, told Sunday Nation that he is still a student and has not completed the course.

UoN communications director John Orindi said he was admitted to the university on a module two program in 2003.

“It is true Sakaja was admitted to the university and was pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Actuarial Science, studied from the first year up to the fourth year, but is yet to graduate,” said Mr. Orindi.

“The university issued a statement… and was clear that the person in question did not complete his studies.”

In a verification letter to the Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI) dated May 31 last year, the university said Mr. Sakaja’s transcripts were incomplete.

“… the university has not signed them,” the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Academic Affairs, Prof Julius Ogeng’o, replied to the DCI, which is carrying out its investigation.

Mr. Sakaja has, in several past media interviews, said he studied actuarial science at the University of Nairobi from 2002 to 2007.

More of Sakaja’s questions came up after a video surfaced online of Sakaja claiming that he had never studied outside the country. The university claims he attended an online program.

“I have never left Kenya in terms of education,” he stated during a past interview.

The university is owned by a Ugandan politician who is an associate of the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party led by President Yoweri Museveni.

Sakaja Political Tiff With Sonko

The abrasive nature of Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko’s brand of politics contrasts deeply with the more sober-minded Sakaja. In his role as a senator, the senator viciously attacked the Governor for running a dysfunctional executive, being abusive, and employing bullying tactics by intimidation and even physical assault. Before the county boss was reduced to a ceremonial governor, the two never saw eye to eye.

Politics being what it is, Sakaja faulted the police for how Sonko was manhandled when attempting to evade arrest. The once bigger-than-life politician was humbled as overzealous police officers cuffed him.

His tweet read:

“I think there would have been a better way of handling a governor elected by the people, in this case. Even after he had been arrested, we saw him being pushed around. A lot of the physical elements of it I do not think were necessary. Unless it is people trying to release different pressures,” Sakaja told KTN News.

In a rejoinder, activist Boniface Mwangi went for the jugular, saying the remarks by the senator were informed by his desire to protect his businesses.

Senator @SakajaJohnson needs Nairobi County government. He runs an outdoor advertising business in this city. The last time he dared criticize Governor @MikeSonko, his outdoor advertising business was vandalized, and he lost business. Sakaja must toe the line or lose business!” wrote Boniface Mwangi.
